Private journal apps for iPhone that don't need an account

Last updated: 26 October 2026 · Facts checked: 27 October 2026 against each app's App Store page and website

Short answer: Six good iPhone journal apps work without creating an account:

  • Punkt: one sentence a day + one-tap mood
  • Apple Journal: free, long entries with media
  • Diarium: also Windows/Android, one-time Pro
  • Diarly: long-form on all Apple devices
  • Daylio: mood and activity tracking
  • DayGram: one line a day, one-time purchase

In each, your journal lives on your device and, if you turn on sync, in your own cloud storage rather than on the app maker's servers.

Disclosure: I'm Gregor and I make Punkt, one of the apps below. To keep this fair, every app gets a "best for" and a "skip it if", and every fact links to its source. If Punkt isn't right for you, one of the others probably is.

Why "no account" matters

When a journal app needs an account, your entries usually sync through the company's servers, and your email is tied to your diary. Apps without an account keep entries on the device and, optionally, in your own iCloud (or Dropbox, OneDrive…). Fewer parties are involved and there is no password to leak. The trade-off: syncing to Android or the web is harder.

The apps

Punkt: best for one sentence a day

Write one sentence and pick your mood with one tap. That's the whole daily habit, and it takes seconds. There's no account and no login, and there are no servers for your entries. Punkt stores your entries in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. With Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on, they're end-to-end encrypted. Lock it with Face ID or Touch ID, add the Lock Screen widget, and export everything as Markdown, CSV or JSON for free. Available in 19 languages. Skip it if: you want long entries, video or audio, an Android/Mac/web app, or AI features. Download Punkt. Free download, optional Premium.

Apple Journal: best free option

Already on your iPhone, completely free, with photos, video, audio, places, multiple journals and Journaling Suggestions. It syncs between iPhone, iPad and Mac via iCloud and can be locked with Face ID. Skip it if: you want your entries in open formats (it exports PDF), or you'd like something more structured for daily mood.

Diarium: best if you also use Windows or Android

Diarium runs on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac without a Diarium account. Sync goes through your own iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or WebDAV. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Rich exports (Word, HTML, JSON, text) and imports from Day One, Apple Journal and others. Skip it if: you want something minimal; Diarium is feature-rich.

Diarly: best for long-form writing on all Apple devices

A polished writing app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch with no account. Lock with Face ID for free. Premium adds iCloud Drive sync, extra encryption for entry text, multiple journals and more export formats. Skip it if: you want sync without a subscription.

Daylio: best for tracking mood and activities

Daylio lets you journal "without typing a single line": tap your mood and activities, optionally add a note, and get charts and weekly reports. Data is stored locally, with optional backups to iCloud Drive or Google Drive. Also on Android. Skip it if: writing, not tracking, is the point for you.

DayGram: best one-line diary with a one-time price

A quiet, E-Ink-style "one line a day" diary. Premium is a single small purchase and adds iCloud backup and PDF export. Its App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected. Skip it if: you want mood tracking.

What about Day One, Journey or Reflectly?

They're good apps, but they don't fit this list:

  • Day One needs a Day One account for sync and keeps the journal on Day One's servers. Day One encrypts that sync on its servers (guide).
  • Journey offers sign-in with Email, Apple or Google and syncs through Journey Cloud (App Store).
  • Reflectly's privacy label lists Contact Info linked to you (App Store).

If you're fine with an account, Day One is the most complete journal there is.

Who should NOT use Punkt

  • People who journal on Android, Windows, Mac or the web
  • Long-form writers and people who want media, templates or several journals
  • Anyone who wants AI summaries or chat
  • Anyone who wants every feature free with no optional upgrade (use Apple Journal)

FAQ

Which journal apps work without an account on iPhone? Punkt, Apple Journal, Diarium, Diarly, Daylio and DayGram can all be used without creating an account with the app maker. Apple Journal uses your existing Apple Account and iCloud.

What is the most private journal app for iPhone? "Most private" depends on what you mean. Apps without an account (Punkt, Diarium, Diarly, DayGram) keep entries on your device and in your own cloud storage. Day One instead keeps the journal on Day One's servers and encrypts that sync there, but needs an account. Punkt stores your entries in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. With Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on, they're end-to-end encrypted. Check each app's App Store privacy label; DayGram, for example, lists Data Not Collected.

Where does Punkt store my entries? Punkt stores your entries in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. With Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on, they're end-to-end encrypted.

Can I get my entries out of these apps? Yes. Punkt exports Markdown, CSV and JSON for free. Diarium exports Word, HTML, JSON and text. Diarly exports Markdown, PDF, RTF and HTML. Daylio exports PDF and CSV. Apple Journal and DayGram export PDF.

Is there a private journal app with a one-time purchase? Diarium Pro and DayGram Premium are one-time purchases. Punkt Premium is available as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. Apple Journal is free.
