Apple Journal alternative: when Punkt fits better, and when it doesn't
Last updated: 26 October 2026 · Facts checked: 27 October 2026
Short answer: Apple's Journal app is free, already on your iPhone, and great for longer entries with photos, video, audio and Journaling Suggestions. For most people it's a good default. Punkt is an alternative if you want something smaller: one sentence a day plus a mood picked with one tap, a free 7-day mood view, and a free export to Markdown, CSV or JSON. Like Journal, it needs no extra account and keeps your entries in your own private iCloud.

Where Apple Journal is better
- It's completely free and preinstalled. There's nothing to buy, ever.
- Rich entries: photos, videos, audio recordings, places, multiple journals.
- Mac app, and it syncs between iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Journaling Suggestions based on your photos, workouts and places, created on-device.
- State of Mind goes into Apple Health.
If you write long entries or want media in your journal, use Apple Journal. It's very good.
Where Punkt is different
- Smaller on purpose. One sentence and one tap. Many people stop journaling because a blank page feels like homework; one line is easy to keep up every day.
- Mood at a glance. Every entry has a mood, so you see your last 7 days in the app and in a Home Screen or Lock Screen widget. Monthly and yearly charts and insights into what drives your moods come with Premium.
- Your data in open formats. Export everything as Markdown, CSV or JSON for free, so it opens in a spreadsheet, Obsidian or any text editor. Apple Journal exports PDF.
- No servers for your entries. Punkt stores your entries in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. With Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on, they're end-to-end encrypted. There's no account and no ads, and the App Store privacy label lists no data used to track you.
- 19 languages, made by a small independent team.
Who should NOT use Punkt
- You want a completely free journal with no optional upgrade → Apple Journal.
- You write long entries or want video, audio or several journals → Apple Journal or Day One.
- You journal on a Mac → Apple Journal, Day One or Diarly.
- You're on an iPhone that can't run iOS 18 → Punkt won't install. Apple Journal needs iOS 17.2.
- You want deep mood statistics and habit tracking → Daylio is stronger there.
Using both
They don't exclude each other. Some people write their one line in Punkt every evening and use Apple Journal for the occasional long entry or trip. Since Punkt exports to Markdown and CSV, you're never locked in.
Download Punkt on the App Store. Free download, optional Premium.
