A Day One alternative for one sentence a day: Punkt vs Day One

Last updated: 26 October 2026 · Facts checked: 27 October 2026

Short answer: If you want a full-featured journal with photos, video, audio, AI features and apps for iPhone, Mac, Android and the web, Day One is the better app and you should stay with it. If you want to write one sentence a day, pick your mood with one tap, and never create an account, Punkt is a simpler Day One alternative for iPhone and iPad. It's a free download with optional Premium.

Written by Gregor Pichler, who makes Punkt. Yes, I'm biased. That's why every Day One fact below links to its source, and why there's a section on who should not use Punkt.

Where Day One is better

Day One has been the reference journaling app for over a decade, and in several areas it's simply stronger:

  • Every platform. Mac, Apple Watch, Android and web. Punkt is iPhone and iPad only.
  • Rich entries. Long-form writing, multiple journals, templates, video, audio, drawings, PDF scans and printed books.
  • AI features, if you want them (Gold plan).
  • Scale. Over 118,000 ratings on the US App Store and a big team behind it.

If several of these matter to you, Day One is the right choice.

Where Punkt is different

  • No account at all. You open the app and write. There's no email, no sign-up and no password. Day One's free plan works without sync, but syncing needs a Day One account.
  • No servers for your entries. Punkt stores your entries in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. With Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on, they're end-to-end encrypted. Day One keeps the journal on Day One's own servers and needs a Day One account. Day One encrypts that sync on its servers.
  • Built for one sentence a day. One line and one tap for your mood, with optional reasons like Family, Work or Food. It takes seconds, which is the point. Your moods from the last 7 days show up in the app and in a free widget; monthly and yearly charts come with Premium.
  • Your data stays portable for free. Export everything as Markdown, CSV or JSON from the share sheet, no subscription needed.
  • Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets so the day's sentence is one tap away.
  • No ads, and no data used to track you per the App Store privacy label.
  • 19 languages, including German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and more.

Who should NOT use Punkt

Be honest with yourself here. Punkt is the wrong app if you:

  • use Android, Windows, a Mac or the web for journaling: Punkt has no apps there (Day One or Diarium are better fits)
  • write long entries or want several journals or templates
  • want video, audio or drawings in your journal
  • want AI to summarise or talk about your entries
  • want the journal kept on the app maker's servers (Day One stores journals on Day One's servers, encrypts that sync there, and needs a Day One account)
  • want every feature free forever, with no optional upgrade (Apple Journal is fully free)

Switching from Day One to Punkt

  1. In Day One, export your journal (PDF, JSON or plain text are free, per Day One's guide). Keep the export as your archive.
  2. Install Punkt and start with today's sentence. Punkt doesn't import Day One entries, so many people keep Day One as the archive of their past and use Punkt for the daily line going forward.
  3. Add the Punkt widget to your Lock Screen.

Download Punkt on the App Store. Free download, optional Premium.
