A free Rosebud alternative without AI: Punkt vs Rosebud

Last updated: 29 October 2026 · Facts checked: 29 October 2026

Short answer:

Rosebud retired its free plan on 30 September 2026.

Rosebud Bloom now costs $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year on rosebud.app. If you used Rosebud for its AI conversations, memory, voice journaling and weekly AI reports, Punkt won't replace that: pay for Rosebud, or pick another AI journal. If what you want is a quiet, private daily journal without paying, Punkt may fit. It's designed for short daily entries: write a line or two and pick your mood with one tap. There's no account and no AI anywhere in the app. It's a free download for iPhone and iPad, with an optional Premium.

Written by Gregor Pichler, who makes Punkt. Yes, I'm biased. That's why every Rosebud fact below links to Rosebud's own pages, and why there's a section on when you should stay with Rosebud.

What happened to Rosebud's free plan

  • The free plan is gone. Rosebud's help centre says: "Effective September 30, 2026, the Rosebud free plan will be retired." Rosebud explains that its new memory system "requires significantly more resources to run".¹
  • Your Rosebud entries aren't deleted. The same notice says: "Nothing you've written is going away, and you can export everything anytime."¹
  • The paid plan. Rosebud Bloom is listed at $12.99/month, or $107.99/year ($8.99/month billed annually) on rosebud.app.² Weekly AI usage limits apply.³

Where Rosebud is better

Rosebud and Punkt are different kinds of apps. If you liked Rosebud for what makes it Rosebud, nothing on Punkt's side replaces it:

  • AI conversations. Rosebud responds as you write. "Go deeper" turns an entry into a back-and-forth, and Ask Rosebud answers questions based on your past entries. Punkt has no AI anywhere in the app.
  • Memory across entries. Rosebud's long-term memory connects new entries to earlier ones, so "you don't have to explain yourself again". This is the feature Rosebud now charges for.
  • AI insights. Every entry gets a reflection, and every week a report covers mood trends, recurring themes and the people you write about.
  • Voice. You can speak your entries in hands-free mode and have replies read aloud. Punkt has no voice journaling; it's text only (iOS keyboard dictation still works).
  • More ways to journal. Guided and custom journals, personalised prompts, morning and evening check-ins, scanning handwritten journals, and up to 10 photos per entry.
  • More platforms. Android, Mac and the web, all on one account. Punkt is iPhone and iPad only.

If these are why you opened Rosebud every day, Bloom at $107.99/year is probably worth it.

Where Punkt is different

  • No AI anywhere in the app. Punkt doesn't send what you write to any AI service or to Punkt servers. Besides iCloud sync, it only goes online for subscriptions (RevenueCat), Apple Music catalog search and Apple Maps place search, and for links you open. None of these receive what you write.

  • No account at all. You open the app and write. There's no email, no sign-up and no password.

  • No servers for your entries. Punkt stores your entries on your device and in your private iCloud, with no Punkt account and no Punkt servers. You can lock the app with Face ID or Touch ID for free.

  • Free to keep writing. The download is free. Free, you get:

    • one story a day for today, with your mood and influences from the built-in lists
    • the 7-day mood view, your current and best streak, and the Write Today, Streak and Mood Trend widgets for the Home and Lock Screen
    • export to CSV, JSON, Markdown and single-story PDF

The optional Premium adds more stories a day, past dates, photos, custom feelings and influences, monthly and yearly charts, saving Apple's Journaling Suggestions (iPhone) and a PDF of all entries.

  • Designed for short daily entries. A line or two and one tap for your mood. It takes seconds, which is the point. There's a daily quote, but no prompts.

  • Your data stays portable. Export everything as CSV, JSON or Markdown from the share sheet, with no subscription needed.

  • No ads, no tracking.

  • 19 languages, including German, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese.

Stay with Rosebud if…

Punkt is the wrong app if you:

  • want an AI that talks back, asks follow-up questions or remembers your past entries
  • want AI summaries, weekly reports or insights about your writing
  • like to speak your journal rather than type it
  • want prompts, guided journals or morning and evening check-ins to tell you what to write
  • want several journals or a full writing environment for long entries
  • use Android, a Mac or the web for journaling
  • want to bring your Rosebud entries into the new app: Punkt can't import them

In those cases, paying for Rosebud Bloom or choosing another AI journal will serve you better.

Other options: if you want AI in a full-featured journal, Day One offers AI features in its paid Gold plan (see our Day One comparison).

Moving from Rosebud to Punkt

  1. Export your Rosebud journal first, even if you're not sure yet. In the Rosebud mobile app, it's under Settings → Export. On the web, go to Settings → "Export to Markdown" for all your entries.¹³ Keep the file somewhere you control as your archive.
  2. Install Punkt and write today's story. Punkt doesn't import Rosebud entries, so keep your Rosebud export as the archive of your past and use Punkt for the daily line from now on.
  3. Add a Punkt widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen: Write Today, Streak or Mood Trend.

Download Punkt on the App Store. Free download, optional Premium.
